Suicide blast prompts closure of schools and colleges

Staff Report

RAWALPINDI: The city’s government and private educational institutions were closed within minutes of the Shalimar Plaza suicide bombing. The classes will however resume today (Tuesday), according to Rawalpindi Commissioner Zahid Saeed. The commissioner told Daily Times that the city district government (CDG) had already directed the administrations of private and government at local schools and colleges to tighten security in and around their premises. He said directions had been issued for placing concrete blockades and deploying security guards in front of main entrance to educational institutions. Saeed said the school and college closure was a temporary solution to the problem and therefore, the CDG had been making every effort to provide students and teachers with safe environment. President of All Pakistan Schools and Colleges Owners’ Association (APSCOA) Muhammad Abrar confirmed that private educational institutions would be opened today (Tuesday). He said the APSCOA didn’t favour the idea of closing down schools and colleges in view of terrorist attacks. He said the association had directed all its members to beef up security in and around their premises. Meanwhile, Arsalan, the spokesman for Rawalpindi Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (RBISE), said there was no change in the intermediate supplementary examination schedule. He said the Pakistan Studies (Compulsory) Part-II examination would be held in the morning and that of Fine Arts Part-II in the evening.
